What is Mental Health?

How can we better understand…

Mental health can be understood to be our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It may affect several aspects of our lives such as daily living, relationships and physical health. Common conditions such as stress, depression and anxiety often disrupt a person’s state of well-being which is why Wavecare strives to support and promote positive mental health under the guidance of trained professionals.

Mental health also helps determine how we manage stress, relate to other individuals and make important life decisions. Over the course of one’s life, we will be faced with challenges and problems which may adversely affect our thinking, mood and behaviour. However, with the advancements in research and evidence-based psychological interventions, help can be sought thereby promoting positive mental health and balanced well-being.

The practitioners at Wavecare have had years of education and professional training and specialise in various therapeutic interventions.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy
  • Family/Systems Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy
  • Play Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

The process of collaboration is held in high regard at Wavecare, and our trained staff regularly seek feedback from clients to ensure effective service delivery and tailored client care.

As a community organisation, we have had extensive experience working with individuals across the lifespan and offer inclusive care to people from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people who identify as LGBTQI.

What exactly is mental health?

Your mental health incorporates your emotional psychological and social well-being, and it can affect how people think, feel, act and cope with different events and experiences throughout their life. Your mental health can also play a significant role in how you deal with stress, your relationships with other people, and your decision-making abilities.

What are the first signs of mental health issues?

Some common signs that might indicate that you are experiencing mental health issues include an on-going feeling of sadness, experiencing concentration issues, experiencing strong feelings of guilt, fear or concern, issues with sleeping or energy levels, extreme mood swings with highs and lows, and a feeling of wanting to withdraw from social engagements, friends and family.

When should I seek mental health support?

If you are feeling any of the above symptoms, then we recommend you seek mental health support to assist you.
